Galega

IMG_8781_edited.jpg

Galega is Portugal's most important olive cultivar. Historically difficult to propagate via cuttings, it has found an effective solution to these propagation limitations through *in vitro* micropropagation. The plant is highly susceptible to low temperatures, salinity, and calcareous soils, yet it exhibits excellent tolerance to water stress. It is characterized by remarkable vegetative vigor and early fruit ripening, with fruit that shows high resistance to detachment. While it is well-suited for processing in the oil mill, its utility is limited by low oil yields; conversely, it is ideal as a table olive due to its excellent "freestone" quality (the flesh separates easily from the pit). This variety is recommended exclusively for traditional olive groves and is entirely unsuitable for modern super-intensive, ultra-high-density systems (exceeding 1,000 trees/ha).
